Our Services
Family Based Care
We provide family-based care through Sohkastwâw Lodge. This program aims to address the historical and current colonialization of Indigenous people, trauma experienced by Indigenous families, and the overrepresentation of children in the care of child welfare organizations throughout Canada. Families within this program have connection to land-based cultural teachings and experiences and evidence-based therapeutic approaches to address trauma, substance use, and other needs of the families.
The approach of Sohkastwâw Lodge is to have family members reside in the same home as this allows for family healing and an ability to have support as they heal and learn to be a heathier family system. Trained, professional Employees will be on site with the family daily to provide trauma-informed supervision, support and guidance for all family members as they work towards their goal of reunification.
Elders and the incorporation of culture are essential components to the program. Elders provide important teachings and facilitate ceremony and other important events that reconnect families with their culture and regain their identity as Indigenous people.
Throughout the program, families will engage with therapists and work on addressing their trauma and the trauma they carry from generations past. Therapy with families will be paced and focus on addressing each family member’s individual needs and the needs of their family as a whole.
This program provides care to youth ages 12-17 from anywhere in Canada, who have had child intervention involvement. Based in Edmonton, Alberta, the homes provide persons served a safe place to live while also facilitating opportunities to address their trauma through holistic healing practices, including land-based teachings, attending cultural ceremonies, meeting with Elders and Knowledge Keepers as well as Western therapy methods. All staff working in the home are trained in trauma-informed practices and are skilled and passionate about working with persons served.
Sacred Pathways Integrative Services Inc. focuses on:
Teaching emotional regulation skills through discussions, practicing intentional techniques and modeling.
Discussion, programming, and interventions based on the impacts of trauma and intergenerational trauma.
Providing opportunities for persons served to participate in their culture through intentional and meaningful meetings with Elders and attending cultural events.
Holistic understanding of health and healing.
Utilizing a trauma-informed approach with intentional and purposeful interventions based on an understanding of brain development, strength-based and relational practice and attachment theory.
Preparing persons served for transition to independence or return to the care of their family or identified permanent caregivers.
Working in partnership with community agencies and supports, as well as the natural supports for persons served, is an essential part of the homes. Partnerships will include work with a certified trauma-informed yoga instructor, Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers, and expressive art therapists. Ongoing collaboration will occur with community partners, including schools, Alberta Health Services (AHS), Edmonton Police Services (EPS), Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), persons served workers, and any other professional or natural support that the persons served identifies.
